I’ve had enough requests to place small content management systems on new client sites. Some that will never get used. I frequently suggest WordPress but I’ll will the first to admit, designing for WordPress is a bit of a nightmare because of all of the levels of code. These sites don’t just load up in Dreamweaver the way you’d think they might.

Just got a new book (Ok, it’s a pdf book) but it has an excellent overview of the wp system.

Digging into WordPress

Right now, the site is set at the default theme. I plan to take the entire site over to WordPress, including the front page and assorted other pages.

Ok, after scaring the bejeaus out of us last Sunday, George is doing fine.

And today, October 16th is his birthday. He’s 11!

Couple of things about our courageous goof and how he came into our lives.

He was bought for a client’s ad campaign by 2 of my biz partners from what I can only assume was a puppy mill in VW. It was just before Christmas and neither one of my partners could take him and my other biz partner wasn’t interested. Beth and I were dating at the time and although we had bought Grace together only 6 months earlier, I wasn’t sure we were ready to commit to another dog. But we needed him for a photo shoot the first week of January and I acquiesced to take him to my house for the week or so. (Grace didn’t live with me then.)

This little smelly goof came with kennel cough and we really didn’t want him near Grace… But Beth had different ideas. Once she met George, the two of them bonded immediately. And it’s been that way ever since.

We did the photoshoots, he’s been in ads, web banners, key fobs etc, and luckily we we able to keep him close by for the year incase there was a follow up. And then for ever. (He was to move to Chicago to live with a client’s son.)

Beth, George and Grace and myself attended training classes for 6 years. We were already in classes with Grace when George arrived. We did 2 hours a week, 7 week sessions. We didn’t get into competitions until the 4th year. George was 2nd, 3rd or 4th in every match we entered. We did 5 competitions and Grace finally got her AKC CD. We dropped out because she got lyme disease that year and she couldn’t jump. I’m convinced George would have been a shoe-in for utility level competions.

In the meantime, Beth was working as an activity assistant at a small private nursing home. George soon started to go with her each day to visit with the little ladies. Something about a low dog that fit under wheel chairs with no tail to get stuck made him seem perfect. Beth worked there for several years and then moved to the nursing home she presently works at. George just followed along. On occasions that Beth is out, they’ve occasionally asked if we could just send George.

There’s a few little ladies at his present nursing home that insist that George is their dog… To them, I say… I have some vet bills for you.

I like shots taken where it seems the camera just shouldn’t be. You know, nighttime, rain, snow and other such elements. Each night I take the dogs out around 10. And I always think it’s a great photo opportunity, but the shots are usually lousy. This night Beth wasn’t home and we were out front waiting.

That’s a genuine Pyr smile where Grace sees Beth’s car coming around the corner.

I am sorry to say that Bob didn’t make it through the night.

He had just given up over the weekend. Wouldn’t eat or drink and that made it impossible to give him his meds. I’d like to say it was peaceful, but I don’t really think it was. He was not comfortable Sunday and spend most of the day in my office trying to find a cool spot. On occasion after each move he’d spend some time making some uncomfortable squeaks trying to catch his breath. I just wished I’d had them leave the chest tube in. The poor thing must have been burning up inside. I had an appointment for him at the vet first thing this morning. I was ready to let him go.

I feel extremely apologetic for Bob’s life. I got him about 12 years ago while I was still single. I got him at the Humane Society with another kitten to replace a cat that had lived with me for 18 years. Bob selected me in the Humane Society kitten room, trying to grab my wallet out of my back pocket.

When the other kitten died suddenly of renal failure less than 1 year old, I didn’t want Bob to be lonely and I got Mikey. Mikey was a year younger and the two cats started a dominace war that lasted until Mikey died. Leasson learned… you really can’t select your cat’s friends.

Several years after I got Bob, I got Beth Gracie and George. Then several years after that, Beth and I got married and the whole family merged.

Bob was the loser of this entire event. He peed in the house all over the place and ultimately got sentenced to the garage. Where a solidary leaf on the floor would be peed on.

He got his days in the sun to lie outside and watch the birds and squirrels. Anytime the dogs were out, he’d come out to greet us. Stomping up the walkway making little meow squeaks. George would usually get a really uncomfortable head butt, and Grace and Bob would sniff each other. Grace would wag her tail. He wanted to be part of the gang, just not Mikey’s gang. Mikey would look jealously from the house windows.

But Bob really relished the days where he could come inside and sit with us while watching TV. He loved the leather chairs in the TV room. He was the sort of cat that would massage you while you pet him. And thus this picture, shot Saturday, is the way I want to remember him… Sleeping comfortable on the leather chairs in the den.

Oh, god here comes an opus.

Bob’s not doing well. Started a week ago, or we noticed it a week ago.

Last Saturday, both Beth and I noticed he was breathing heavy. I thought it was odd but I don’t really study how hard my cats breath. Oh yeah, there are times I come in the house and grace doesn’t move and I stare at her for what seems to be an eternity to make sure she hasn’t conked out in the middle of a bad dream. And before you think that’s bad… I did the same thing with mom in her last years.

But this is Bob. 11, almost 12 years old. Lives in the garage because he can’t be trusted in the house. Bob was named after my dad. (My old vet use to label meds with the cat’s name and the owner’s last name. Bob Poole. Dad, I have your ringworm medicine. Dad wasn’t amused.)

Anyhow, this Monday I took Bob to the vet. Wait, before that, his breathing was LABORED by Sunday night. His voice was a cross between a peep and a squeek. I was starting to worry he’d eaten something that had gotten stuck in his throat.

Well, we’re at the Vet. Nice woman, not the same one that worked on Mikey. Rules out a multitude of things. It’s either heart failure or a tumor. She wants to x-ray him but won’t do it to him in this condition. I’d always given the stethoscope a bit of skepticism, but my vet put her stethoscope to his chest and said “I can hear fluids. It’s hard to hear his heart on the right side. We need to drain his chest.”

Oh fun.

Done off a IV, 12 ccs at a time She drew a pink goop out of the needle stuck through his rib cage. And as we watched a cat go from pink blue to pink and from very quiet to curious and friendly. Some 250 cc’s later (coffee cup full) he was animated and breathing normally.

X-rays show a right lung in shadow, a lung that was full of fluid. $400.

That was Monday.

Today, Thursday was our return trip. test results are back, pink goo is from a lymph node. Apparently one is leaking or has burst due to injury or tumor. He’s breathing hard again. Not as bad but definately heavy. Back to the chest tube. I’m thinking I can’t do $400 again, if it’s going to lead to a pink shot.

This time it was dark pink goo and only 180cc. I’m not sure I should be happy about the “only” 180 and worried about the blood in the goo.

While doing this, the vet assistent tells us she had to do this to her cat once.

“wow, did he get better?”

“no, he didn’t make it.”

This appointment was $77. New meds. Prednaozone for cats.

We go back Monday… maybe another chest drainage. In all, I’m giving it another week, it’s not the money. I really hate seeing him labor to breath. He seems to appreciate the trips to the vet. He appreciates the attention when we give him pills. He’s such a nice cat.

I don’t know where this is going.
